Huskers enthusiasts have seen this same situation before during the past 4 years.

There had been the Texas and USC situations in 2006, USC once more in ’07, and then the Hokies during the 2008 year in Lincoln, all with the same outcome – the “Huskers not ready for primetime players.”

The last time the Nebraska defeated a ranked opponent on the road was in November 2006, when the Huskers beat then-ranked No. 24 Texas A&M, 28-27, in Texas.

However that was a different time, a different coach, and, essentially, different athletes.

Everybody knows that when you go up against a Frank Beamer franchise you can anticipate great execution on both sides of the ball, in addition to remarkable play by special teams. They displayed that yet again during their 1st game this year vs. Alabama.

Alabama outperformed Virginia Tech by almost a two-to-one margin, however happened to be only ahead by a FG late in the 4th quarter because of a kickoff runback for a touchdown.

The simple thing that Nebraska fans have learned with this season’s team is that the missed assignments and out-of-position plays have virtually vanished. There is less muddling on the defense and as a result, more plays are being made because the athletes are reading and acting on this rather than thinking.

Head coach Bo Pelini now sees a franchise that completely gets the importance of grinding it out.

This season, the franchise understands what it takes to be successful. It realizes what its identity is on both offense and defense.

I genuinely do feel that the Huskers have finally turned the corner, and have the ideal athletes in the best positions come through with their first large road victory in three seasons.

I forecast the Huskers victorious in a low-scoring, tight contest in overtime by a three point margin.
